NewsFrom Andrea Faste, Board PresidentOur dedication of the wonderful Welcome Figure now standing in the Salmon Bay Natural Area was the highlight of July for Groundswell NW. We had a lovely morning, a crowd of over 50, and a sculpture that truly captures the spirit of the salmon life cycle. I was delighted to learn Marvin Oliver the sculptor had collaborated with Rich Royal, who is a well known local glass artist, to create the round glass circles representing salmon eggs in the middle of the disc that the figure is holding over his head.
If you have not yet seen it, get down there! I want to salute Dave Boyd for the incredible job of coordinating the Salmon Bay Natural Area project over more than 10 years. The chronology of cooperation between the City, County, State and Federal government along with many others represents 1000's of hours of volunteer time, and the importance of perseverance and patience. Dave was ably assisted the last couple of years by Liz Dunigan, our Groundswell mycelium expert, who helped coordinate work parties, snag boxes of coffee from Starbucks, and send out reminders that were fun to look at as well as informative. If you visit the sculpture on August 8, you can also hear the Ballard Sedentary Sousa Band playing the marches of John Phillip Sousa for a free concert at 2pm on the Locks grounds...the sedentary baton twirler is not to be missed.
