In late May, Alyssa Smith, Heidi Nelson and Andrea Faste met with various Park personnel to find out what neighbors could help with at the park.  Below, please find the minutes from that gathering.

5/29 meeting at 9th Ave NW Park

Attendance:

Royal Alley-Barnes

Theresa McEwen

Jody Blecksmith

Patrick Merriam

Andrea Faste

Heidi Nelson

Alyssa Smith

Friends of the Park Agreement

  • Agreement provides coverage to volunteers.
  • Stipulates certain amount of involvement and rules.
  • Was reviewed and signed by Alyssa Smith, on behalf of the neighbors.  Lead of this group acts as the liaison with the city and coordinates work parties.  Any questions that other community members have that cannot be answered by this person are sent to R. Alley-Barnes.

911 procedures

  • R. Alley-Barnes reviewed 911 procedures, and will forward written guidelines shortly.

Caretaker

  • Being posted within the next 5 days by Parks, should be in place by July.
  • This person will be doing some weeding and other grounds work on site.

Water/Community Garden opportunity

  • If possible, Parks may be able to set the water system so that the neighbors can operate a community garden.  This is not a p-patch and produce or flowers cannot be sold or marketed; food bank donation is a possibility.
  • Water would be paid for by the Dept of Neighborhoods.
  • R. Alley-Barnes will inform neighbors if this arrangement is feasible.

Maintenance

  • Caretaker will be doing grounds work
  • Work parties can be held.  Any topics for work parties should be run by Theresa McEwen (Parks, Volunteers) and Jody Blecksmith (Parks, Gardener) prior to work being done.
  • Possible tasks include removal of plastic mulch, replacing with mulch provided by Parks, ivy pull, and pruning of selected plants.
  • The hedges bordering the park and other yards should not be worked on by volunteers.
  • Disposal of greenery and other work party by products is problematic, as budget for disposal does not yet exist.  This will be addressed on a work party by work party basis for the time being.
