From the PresidentWe did have a great turnout over 100 for the Edible Garden Tour, a beautiful day and lots of enthusiasm. Thanks to you who came. Now on to summer. Please come to the ice cream social on July 18 at our new park on 9th NW. Come early and pull some weeds! In honor of summer's most important aspect, I am reprinting one of my favorite poems by Mary Oliver. The Sun, as it appears in New and Selected Poems, 1992, Beacon Press, Boston.
NewsThe former Crown Hill Elementary building officially became the property of Small Faces Child Development Center today just after 2pm. The Crown Hill Project team, made up of representatives of 10 different groups and non-profit organizations, worked through a three year process to secure the building, and surrounding 2+ acres for perpetual community and park use. Seattle Parks purchased the majority of the open space, influenced both by the Neighborhood Planning Process ten years ago, as well as by overwhelming community support. The building, built in 1919 and added on to in 1949, will remain home to current tenants, as well as become the new home of Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

It is also a great time to invite new neighbors to join you and talk with friends and family who may not enjoy the benefits of a Block Watch about getting one started. The East Ballard Community Association is encouraging you to participate in this event by closing down your block for the evening for a community get together. Normally you have to pay for a permit to close down your street, but on this night, it’s free! This way of thinking results in a huge range of public benefits, including increased mobility for transit and freight. A bicycle is a low impact vehicle, but what else can we imagine? Everything from poetry to prototypes will be on display. aLIVe takes place in an urban park with a paved path so that exhibitors can demonstrate their projects. Confirmed projects include the “All-Terrain” by artist Nicole Kistler, the “Walk and Roll” by artist Peter Reiquam, “Barefoot in the Park” by choreographer Alex Martin, "Vehicle for Slowness” by artist Vaughn Bell and the “Undriver Licensing Station” by Sustainable Ballard.
