From the President

The daisies are everywhere in my yard now. Summer is actually around the corner, and temperatures are high enough to put in the cucumbers and summer squash. Groundswell NW is cooperating this month with the gardening guild of Sustainable Ballard to hold an Edible Gardening Tour which we have dubbed, "When times are hard, eat your yard." Saturday, June 27 there will be 10 gardens on the map, all with different features to encourage new gardeners, gardeners with kids, gardeners with friendly neighbors, gardens in tiny areas, gardens with fruit trees, just a great assortment. You can get a ticket in advance at BrownPaperTickets.com, or just show up on the 27th at the Ballard P-Patch at 26th NW and NW 85th St.

I'd also like to mention that the Ballard Garden Club has offered to weed in Baker Park on Crown Hill, across Mary Ave. NW east of the Crown Hill Safeway. This wonderful group of friends has been meeting for years, sharing garden lore, and taking on a community gardening project together. I have been delighted to have them come to little Baker Park, as it gets very little regular attention from the neighborhood. If you care to join in, we will be there on Wednesday evening, June 10 from 6:30 PM on. I will be providing take out dinner for those who come.

Wed, 06/03: Restore Our Waters Watersheds Forum

You will want to attend if your goal is to improve Seattle's aquatic habitat and water quality, and are interested in expanding public action.

In December 2008, Restore Our Waters convened the watershed groups working in five major watersheds in Seattle - Fauntleroy, Pipers, Longfellow, Taylor and Thornton. We started a dialogue about what is happening to improve our waters, where the gaps are, and the opportunities. This second Forum is to take the conversation to the next step, and make some choices about what we can work on together.

Please RSVP to Susan Harper susan.harper@seattle.gov. A detailed agenda and more information will be provided before the forum, so your RSVP is important.

Time: 5:30 PM to 8:45 PM
Location: Seattle REI - 222 Yale Ave N

Thu, 06/04: Security in Ballard Parks Meeting

In April, a petition signed by over 100 business and property owners in downtown Ballard was submitted to Parks Superintendent Tim Gallagher.

The petition requested that a "parks exclusion zone" be established covering three parks in downtown Ballard: Ballard Commons, Bergen Place, and Marvin's Garden. Prior to acting on this request, the Seattle Parks Department has called a community meeting to hear your comments, and to share with you other possible strategies to be considered in efforts to improve safety at our downtown Ballard parks.

Please join us on Thursday, June 4, 7 PM, at the Ballard Library and share your observations and get involved with efforts to make downtown Ballard a safe, welcoming environment and to discourage public behavior which is offensive or unlawful.
