From Andrea Faste, Board President

Normally, I wish you a happy June and this month Groundswell does have two great events coming up...see the entries for the Saturday, June 12 at Salmon Bay Natural Area, the Saturday, June 19 Solstice Party at Golden Gardens and for Saturday, June 26, our Edible Garden Tour in East Ballard...but I felt like writing the following rant today, so if you are not in the mood for a rant, please just jump to the calendar.   Andrea

I woke to this cold Memorial Day and realized my cucumber starts would continue curling across my kitchen counter another day. But my second thought went to Louisiana and the Gulf coast. And then I got to thinking about greed...and how the crazy weather in Seattle may be just as much a result of greed as the unimaginable outpouring of oil down there. British Petroleum, dubbed Beyond Pathetic by Van Jones in a recent visit here, while raking in profit of $63,000,000 a day, chose not to install a $500,000 spill prevention device required by other offshore rigs in most other countries just to save some money. Greed is the motivation behind the big corporations that keeps us chained to fossil fuels, and hence the climate changes we see in our backyards. Some folks are angry enough to boycott BP gas (around here that's Arco) but I am more inclined toward getting my hair cut at local salons where the cuttings are being swept up and sent south to make booms to soak up the oil (Rudy's and Habitude). (For information on this effort, visit www.matteroftrust.org) Either gesture is small, and possibly pointless, but they are small stabs at Greed.
