June 2011 News
NewsFrom Catherine Darley, Board PresidentDid you know . . . last year 190 million gallons of sewage and storm water flowed directly into our local waterways here in Seattle? More than 25% of this is from the Ballard neighborhood. Part of the Groundswell NW mission is to preserve habitat, so at our last Board meeting Andrew Lee of Seattle Public Utilities told us more about the problem, and some solutions. During heavy rains, the combined sewer system can't keep up with the volume, so it overflows into our waterways. This overflow is polluted with human waste, chemicals, hydrocarbons and heavy metals which can impact fish, wildlife and swimmers. The solution is three-fold: retrofit existing structures, allow stormwater to filter into ground, and increase storage capacity. There are a couple ways you can be part of the solution to keep our waterways healthy. First, consider participating in the RainWise program by directly your downspouts to a rain garden or other projects (remember there are rebates available for certain parts of Ballard). Second, participate in the public comment period coming up in July. Click here to learn more about the Restore Our Waters program. Next time there are heavy rains I'll be thinking about the sewer system, and hope you will join me in taking what steps you can to keep our waterways clean. Here are two great links: Restore our Waters and RainWise. Catherine Darley Park of the Month - Salmon Bay Natural AreaOK, it's not technically a park, in that it's not a Seattle Parks property. Instead it's a mix of the 34th Ave NW shoreline street end, Ballard rail spur right-of-way and five shoreline parcels purchased by Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) as part of their salmon recovery efforts. And June is a good month to go and try to spot juvenile salmon in the shallows below the overlook deck. Those shallows are very important for young salmon who hit salt water for the first time as they spill through the flumes at the Locks. Dazed by the transition, they are very susceptible to predators and escape to the shallows where they adjust to the salt water. There they feast on daphnia fly larva who are also dazed by the transition, and build strength for the journey to the ocean. It has been a year since we dedicated the Salish Welcome sculpture by Marvin Oliver that pays homage to the salmon. In that year, the steel base plates have been added and are developing a rich rusty patina, with adult salmon swimming upstream and juveniles swimming down. Groundswell developed this natural area in partnership with SPU, and we've taken on the maintenance of the flatter upland areas, as well as the adjacent stretches of Seaview Avenue, NW 54th Street and the Burke Gilman Trail and . Thanks to a half dozen dedicated volunteers, we pulled a truckload of weeds in May, but there's more to do, so come join us for the workparty listed below. Or stop by anytime and look for the smolts below, the osprey nesting on the RR tower across the way, or the wide variety of wildlife that uses this verdant slice of undeveloped Ballard shoreline. Groundswell NW EventsSun, 06/26: Salmon Bay Natural Area WorkpartyPlease join us for a clean-up of the overlook area and adjacent stretches of NW 54th St., Seaview Ave NW and the Burke Gilman Trail. Tasks will depend a bit on whether we can get the City to mow, but could include mowing and/or weed-whacking, so let us know if you have a weed whacker, brush clearer or weed-whacking mower you could bring or lend. We'll then lay down rolls of cardboard to smother the weeds, and if we can get wood chips delivered, spread them over the cardboard. If you have any major pruning or tree removal, we could use any wood chips! Bring work gloves and any hand tools that could be useful - shovels, pitchforks, wheelbarrows, etc. We plan to order pizza for the crew toward the end of the workparty! Hunt for the pernicious garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) and other invasives, watch for mountain beaver holes, identify cool dune plants, tour the wetland restoration, and watch ducks in the ponds. This park has lots to offer for plant enthusiasts and is a great place to learn about the impacts of invasive plants on our lowland ecosystems and urban forests. The terrain is varied at this park, from steep hillsides to level trails to sandy beaches. The tour will meet in the upper parking lot next to the off-leash dog area (that way we will be mostly hiking downhill as we tour the forest) and make our way down to the beach in time for lunch, followed by botanizing on the dunes and in the restored wetland area.
