NewsFrom Catherine Darley, Board PresidentOur Park of the Month program continues, focusing on Webster Park this month. As you may know, Webster is the first park created by Groundswell, and the one that really got us started. Amy Janas is gathering a group to start refurbishing project, and Lillian Riley (Groundswell NW founder) is coordinating the repair of the bas relief art on the east wall. Take time to head on over there with a picnic, a good book, or a child ready to play! Along with Sustainable Ballard we're holding the 3rd Annual Edible Garden Tour on June 25th. We're currently looking for gardeners (south of 65th and west of 24th) who would like to open their garden to the public. Please let us know if you are interested. You can email me at drdarley@naturalsleepmedicine.net. Mark your calendars now for this fabulous, inspirational event, and invite your friends. As ever, we welcome volunteer efforts. If you see a way to better an existing park or to envision a new project please let us know. Ballard Bike Share Wants Bikes At Your WorkplaceGroundswell NW is helping The Bike Share Group to create a Community Bike Sharing Project for the Ballard neighborhood this summer. We are putting 20-40 bikes around the neighborhood at 5-10 stations to showcase public bicycle systems and to promote bicycling as a great transportation option. To help get this project going and to promote healthy activity at the workplace, we want to offer the use of automated bike stations to businesses in return for a donation to GSNW for the Ballard Bike Share Project. Each donation funds a station for the company and a station for the Ballard Bike Share Project. The sponsoring company would receive exclusive use of a bike share station located at their facility, loaded with bicycles that their employees can use as they see fit. Go to lunch, a meeting, exercise, or check out bike commuting! The Bike Share Group would take care of insurance, maintenance, helmets, etc. We are asking GSNW members to consider if their companies might be interested in having some great bicycles for their employees to use. Let's really promote the type of world and workplace we want. This Saturday, May 21st, from 9 AM to Noon, we will be: 1. Pulling and removing small blackberry canes and other invasive plants, 2. Trimming and removing large blackberry canes that cannot be pulled from the ground, and 3. Clearing and removing garbage that has accumulated onsite. If you can come out for a couple of hours this Saturday and lend a hand that would be great. Most of the blackberry canes are small right now, and we hope the wet, soft soil will make it easier than waiting until things dry up. We will have a selection of tools and supplies to work with as well as gloves from friends and neighbors as well as Seattle's Spring Clean program but bring a yard tool of your own if you have one (clippers, pruners, rakes, etc.). There may be some added refreshments. If you have any questions about Saturday let us know, otherwise please come out this Saturday, May 21st, from 9 AM to Noon and join us tidy up the Troll's Knoll. Our primary focus will be on lawn and garden pesticides - weed killers, insect killers and fungicides - used around homes, public parks and school grounds. At just over 90 acres Woodland Park is an exciting, multipurpose park and recreation space just southwest of Green Lake and north of the Fremont district. It is separated into two parts by Aurora Avenue. East of Aurora, just south of Green Lake Park, the park is an ideal spot for picnics with picnic areas, barbecues, woods, pleasant grassy hills and pathways. It is also one of the city's most active hubs for sports and recreation, including walkway paths, several playfields, tennis courts, lawn bowling, horseshoe pits, a skatepark, and a large, wooded dog off-leash area. Directions: From I-5, take the 50th St exit. Follow 50th St west. You will pass straight through a large intersection with Stone Way. Just after this intersection, turn RIGHT onto Woodland Park Ave N. Drive a few hundred feet and look for the EarthCorps volunteer registration table on your right. We will tour the native and non-native plants in the forest, wetlands, dunes and landscaped areas of this diverse urban park in northwest Seattle. Hunt for the pernicious garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) and other invasives, watch for mountain beaver holes, identify cool dune plants, tour the wetland restoration, and watch ducks in the ponds. This park has lots to offer for plant enthusiasts and is a great place to learn about the impacts of invasive plants on our lowland ecosystems and urban forests. The terrain is varied at this park, from steep hillsides to level trails to sandy beaches. The tour will meet in the upper parking lot next to the off-leash dog area (that way we will be mostly hiking downhill as we tour the forest) and make our way down to the beach in time for lunch, followed by botanizing on the dunes and in the restored wetland area.
